Young Rebels

The process room Young Rebels offers a platform, which is used and activated by young people. Following the themes of the exhibition, teenagers between 12 and 18 years old, with and without migration history, tell their personal experiences on the topic of anti-colonial resistance and present them to the public.

Following the themes of the exhibition, teenagers between 12 and 18 years old, with and without migration history, tell their personal experiences on the topic of anti-colonial resistance and present them to the public.

Following the peer-to-peer idea, young people are involved in the communication of the exhibition and can actively address their peers. The forms of expression are chosen by self-organized groups of teens or cooperation partners themselves and can be performative, medial or artistic. The space also offers the possibility to hold events with small audiences to present project results. Links with the other rooms of the exhibition are planned and are intended to promote self-confidence and empowerment among the participants.

With Young Rebels, young people become prominent actors in the exhibition. They make visible their current conflicts and their ideas and wishes for future. Hearing their voices allows for a better understanding of the many ways in which the youth struggle, resist, and cope. The RJM seeks to learn from their everyday resistance.

Films of the "Empowerment Academy"

The Empowerment Academy (a project of Coach e.V. ) promotes and strengthens the empowerment of people who are affected by racism and exclusion. In a protected setting, multipliers are trained and made aware of structural racism and discrimination with the aim of supporting their political and social commitment.

The films are part of the project “Create. Empowerment through stories, art and exchange” of the Coach e.V. Empowerment Academy. The artists tell their own stories about growing up and becoming adults in and outside of Germany. Identity, racism and empowerment are central themes of the film series. The film team of In-Haus e.V. assisted the artists with the filming, sound and editing.

The Youth Workshop Cologne-Chorweiler of the Jugendfreizeitwerk Köln e.V.

For 40 years, the youth workshop of the Jugendfreizeitwerk Köln e.V. has been supporting teenagers and young adults in their life orientation and preparing them for school graduation. The process, which takes place within the framework of a work-based pedagogical instruction and the vocational college, serves for many as a stepping stone into working life. The young people of different nationalities are trained in the three areas of printing, wood and metal.

The young people of the Youth Workshop reflected on the theme of resistance in their everyday lives and how art can create a space for understanding, self-reflection, self-empowerment and communication. As a result, they decided to bring a piece of their workshop to the exhibition RESIST! The Art of Resistance.
